Video File Formats

I have tried out various quality versions of  videos and have found that the best set up is to create a Windows Media Player file. These files are only useable for those with high speed internet access or broadband access.

The files start playing right away at the same time as they are downloading. The viewer will see the play status as a short bar moving across the screen and the download status as a increasing length green bar which will move faster than the play status inicator.

Initially, the only way I have  found enough space for these files was to run them off my personal PC using a server program. This worked quite well and  is safe re read only access to this PC. As of April 12, 2006 , I acquired new web space and now have them stored in the main site at StartLogic.

Here is an interesting link to Google Videos about Ethiopia with Ethiopian music & dancing. One of these is a video I took in Ethiopia of  "Chanting Priests" in Lalibela:

Tehnical Information

For a while there will be updates here, about what tools were used to create the site and experience overall with website construction.  I had been using Nvu for site design but  am now using Microsoft Frontpage 2003.

Web Sites

The  "Miller Web Centre" website is now on a  US web server site, called StartLogic. The cost is $6 USD / month for 15000 Mb.

The use of  Carlton University's Server is free and they have no published limit on the size of the web space.  Jacqui & Rob  used Carlton's "National Capital Freenet" to set up their Wedding Web Site. To get an account got to www.ncf.ca and register.  You should make an appropriate  donation to their cover costs.

Sympatico  has free web space (5 Mb)  for Sympatico customers. This 5 Mb will store about 80 pictures at a size of 640 by 480 which is a fair number of pictures.  These can be easily referenced in an e-mail if desired.  My Sympatico  website is being used to test new things!.

There are also many free web sites that come with some advertising included.  One that I have tried was recommended by Terri, a  friend of Jacqui's in Ethiopia. The server is at www.tripod.com. Terri's site is at terriosullivan1.tripod.com/ethiopia/.  Terri's comment on the advertising with Tripod.com is that it is confined to the top and bottom of the screen and you can select the type of ads to fit into your site design. Have a look at her site.  I have also tried www.tripod.com.  Access it at jajmmiller.tripod.com  to see what I have loaded it with to date.

Picture Albums

This part of the page contains links to Internet software that provide a better presentation of pictures.  I have tried Web Album Generator, Web Picture Creator and JAlbum.  To get information on the first two go to www.ornj.net and www.webpicturecreator.com

There is an  interesting picture album software  from Google, called Picassa.  Dowload this and you can then generate web albums that give an excellent layout and presentation of your pictures. An example of what the album can look like can be seen by clicking on:  California - April 2005

As of December, 2007 I have been using JAlbum for most photo album applications

Pop Up Menus & Images!!

Go here to see new pop up menu created with Fireworks MX.

and

Creating Image Disjoint Rollovers (like menu pop up but images).
This is a way of setting a series of thumbnails on page, possibly
on the left or right, and when one hovers over a particular
thumbnail a larger image appears at a designated spot on the page.
The image size can be as big as you want.

and

Sold Art R1

Example #2 of Thumbnails and "Pop Up" of Larger Images.

I was trying to duplicate how  many we sites produces thumbnails and presents
larger images, but with a hover activation rather than clicking on thumbnails.
The overall effort is  labour intensive and would be difficult to re-adjust
as art moved into different categories like from mixed media to sold etc.
