This year, as in past
years, the Wollaston Lake Home and Cottage Association
set up a table on the main street of Coe Hill and gave out
treats to all visitors. We were located at Ron and
Kathy Earle's landscape centre. Ron and
Kathy and friends had decorated the building with Halloween
decorations and were also handing out treats to local little
goblins! We were all in "full uniform" !

TAKE A KID FISHING
DERBY,
July 5, 2008
Saturday July 5th was a great day for
fishing with children and grandchildren. 25 young fishing
enthusiasts carried their catch up to the weight station at Island
View to be admired by all. Thank you again to Bronwyn Sage, and Bev
Meyers who did all the advance planning and purchasing of prizes and
Bronwyn’s friend Cathy who showed up from Bancroft to assist
in the weighing and catching those fish who wiggled off the weighing
stand. This year Bev and Bill’s granddaughter Monica
McCaw pitched in also to make sure the day was a success. Thank you
also to the WLHCA for sponsoring this event again. It is one of the
best weekends for kids. The contestants all went home with big
smiles on their faces and prizes under their arms.
The prize winners were as follows. Hopefully the
names have the correct spelling.

CHILDREN’S FUN DAY,
July 12th 2008
The sun
shone, 32 kids laughed and splashed at the water’s edge
and giggled as they tried out all the activities such as
wheelbarrow race, one legged race, water balloon toss,
throwing balls in hoops, a water play area for little
ones, filling up the bucket with water using a leaky
jug, and eating jelly and whipped cream with their hands
behind their back., and many more at WLHCA’s Children’s
Fun Day on Saturday July 12th. Shouts
of JELLO, JELLO, JELLO, echoed around the bay!!!!
New
friends were made and old ones renewed as children at
the lake had a chance to get together for a bit of
frivolity thanks to Kelly Earle and her sister-in law
Kim Finley, who organized a great summer event for the
kids and purchased all the food (yummy watermelon this
year) and prizes for all the participants. This day
would be impossible without all the great volunteers.
Angela Metauro, Kim Robertson, Joan Whitney, and Karen
Staples assisted Kelly and Kim, leading the children
through their activities, putting out the equipment,
setting out the prizes and cleaning up afterwards. Also
making the day memorable was Joan Earle who painted
little faces and Jim Dehaseth and Roy Tanouye who cooked
up the hot dogs for everyone and served juice boxes and
watermelon slices and freezies for lunch. Thank you also
to Bev and Bill Meyers who so kindly host the event on
their beach. Thank you also to my grandchildren
Matthew and Alexandra Stewart who ran and fetched and
did all sorts of odd jobs as they joined in the fun and
their dad for bringing the BBQ on the trailer.
Although
I was a wee bit tired by the time we were all done, I
wouldn’t have missed seeing the pure enjoyment on so
many children’s faces. After all, that’s what summer is
all about isn’t it. Make sure you check out the pictures
for this event.

GOLF DAY,
July 19
July 19th was a wonderful sunny day,
perfect to enjoy WLHCA’s Golf Day at Marvel Rapids where
outstanding improvements to their club house includes a
large lovely wood and glass dining area. A big thanks from
WLHCA and the 53 golfers to Ken Smelser who organized
the event for us again and had a great selection of prizes
for the avid golfers of all ages. Ken golfed in the first
group and then welcomed all the golfers as they finished
their rounds. I was able to take pictures of the golfers on
the on the ninth hole and in the winners’ circle. Ken was
able to put a name to most of the pictures of the golfers
for the web site so if there is a hitch we apologize in
advance.
Ken emphasized how much he and the golfers appreciated the
prizes contributed by local merchants and
players and cottagers. Additionally on behalf of all the
players, he wanted to commend Helen Osborne and her staff
at Marvel Rapids Golf Course for all their help and
congratulate them on their continuing improvement of the
facility.
The winners and both runners up qualified for
the Interlake Tournament to be played at Marvel Rapids in
August.

Excerpts from story
by Tammy Wilson, Bancroft Times Thursday July 24, 2008:
Big Improvements were
announced for Wollaston Township, and were shared wit h the
public at the 2nd annual Community Open House on July 19.
MPP for Hastings Prince-Edward Leona Dombrowsky, MP for
Prince Edward-Hastings Daryl Kramp, Warden for Hastings
County Ron Emond, and Reeve Dan McCaw were among the
dignitaries in attendance for the event. "We're here
to celebrate all of the things that make our community what
it is," said Reeve McCaw. We've got the rebuilding of the
Main Street of Coe Hill (Highway 620) underway, the downtown
revitalization is progressing well, and this year alone
we're working on various road improvements, including
Wollaston Lake Road, Beach Road, Lower Faraday Road
and the Ridge Road." Early in 2008, Wollaston Township
applied for and was approved to receive $1,234,142 in grand
funding from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Renewal
to rebuild Highway 620 through the Hamlet of Coe Hill.
The project will starts in August. The township was
also granted $417,405 from the Ministry of Transportation to
undertake various road improvements throughout Wollaston.
The Community Futures Development Corporation of North &
Central Hastings and South Algonquin is also contributing a
potential $75,000 towards revitalization projects underway
in Bancroft, Maynooth and Coe Hill.
"This community is
exceptional in that all of these groups can come together on
one day during the weekend and celebrate all of their hard
work," said MP Kramp. "When you drive through Coe Hill, it
might not look that big, but when you take into account all
of the lakes, cottages, homes and businesses, it really is
an expanded community."

HORSESHOE
TOURNAMENT, August 3
WLHCA extends an enormous
thank you to Angi and Tedd Pickering for hosting
for another year a wonderful outing for cottagers on
Wollaston Lake.at their cottage Angi sent this account
of the 2008 WLHCA Horseshoe Tournament
The 5th
Anniversary Horseshoe Tournament was held on an almost
sunny Sunday, August 3 at Tedd and Angie Pickering's
Cottage.
Ladies
champions were (defending champ) Colleen Ringham and
Judie Steeves. Men's champs Bruce
Wilton and Mart
Kaarmann
needed to beat their opponents twice due to a new double
knock out feature at the tournament. Lots of
horseshoes were thrown, bounced and rolled, and all
agreed they had a great time.
The 81
lb. hip of beef was enjoyed by all, and a big
thank you to all that brought salads and munchies. It
was a great day to see old friends and meet new people.
